brain gym - cross crawl your baby - Audrey
Doing Brain Gym Exercises (cross-crawl) with your baby is no different to any other mother - baby game, except that it intentionally crosses the mid-line. This development is necessary for crawling and to ensure too that the right-brain controls the left side of the body and vice versa.

5th August 09 ~ an email to happinesspages.com

My daughter, Audrey (14 months) has many developmental delays....... - she is at approximately a 6 month level. She is seen by 3 therapists on a weekly basis.

She sits independently, but cannot push herself up from a side sit or when on her belly/back. She rolls and rolls and rolls. She does not crawl yet.

Do you think cross crawl exercises would help in all aspects (physical development, speech development, fine motor skills, eating, feeding self)?
Any advice would be most appreciated. We are coming up on our 6 month goal of army crawling in therapy and aren't even close to reaching it. Thank you!!

Stefani

Audrey was born with bilateral atypical clubfeet, a rare genetic disorder called Grieg's Cephalopolysyndactyly Syndrome (3 main traits are Hydrocephalus, Syndactyly (webbing on feet and hands), Polydactyly (she has an extra toe on each foot)), and hydronephrosis.

At birth they ran several tests to determine the severity of her hydrocephalus and suggested that a shunt was not necessary because her hydrocephalus was very mild. She has had several feeding issues from day one due to her Hydrocephalus.

At her 4 month check up, her doctor became a little concerned with the increase of her head circumference, it didn't jump off the charts, but it was enough of a red flag for her to have a MRI ordered. The MRI showed some increase of CSF in her ventricles and we were referred to a Neurosurgeon. The NS said that the growth wasn't significant enough to have a shunt placed "tomorrow" and suggested we see what her head circumference measured in one month.

At 6 Months, Audrey's pedi became VERY concerned because Audrey was vomiting daily and her measurements jumped even more. Her NS was able to place the shunt one week before Thanksgiving '08. Her development was a slow process after the shunt was placed. We were ready for her to just take off but it has been almost a year.

She was diagnosed with bilateral hearing loss at 9 months - received hearing aids at 12 Months.

Her stats:

  1. She rolled over at 8 months back to belly,
  2. Sat independently at 12 months,
  3. Cross Crawl exercises started at 14 months
  4. Her first word in sign language was Penguin.

Audrey began successfully eating solids at 14 months. Clapped for the first time at 16 months. Army crawled at 17 months - one week later crawling on hands and knees - these all began after we started her on Cross Crawl.

24th August 09 (3 weeks later)

I've been doing cross-crawl exercises when she allows me to and she seems to have a great time. We have been doing them with her laying on her back on the floor and I will bring her opposite hand and foot together. After about 4-5 times of doing this, I will bring her foot up and ask her to grab her foot - this is working great because she laughs every time she finds it.

Over the last week, she has been getting up on her hands and knees more as well as pushing herself (army crawling backwards) to where she wants to go.

'Pauline has given me several tips on how to keep her interested in her Cross Crawl exercises and what to do to make them fun. Once Audrey crossed her midline - she was able to figure out how to do things.'

Thank you Pauline for the wonderful encouragement and suggestions. I am so proud of my baby girl and what she has accomplished.
