Goal Setting - S.A.F.E and Creative

Confused about the right way of goal setting, setting goals? SAFE has been proclaimed as the 'right-brain' system of goalsetting.

This method emphasises involving all your senses and using mental imagery when formulating your goals. In this celebrity and internet world it is common to read about athletes, statesmen, entrepreneurs and business leaders who use such mental imagery (mind video) to set and achieve their goals.

Find out why goalsetting is important. There are many goal setting techniques and as with SMART goal setting, Life Coaching GROW goals and NLP POWER goals, S.A.F.E is an acronym and represents the following:

S = SEE IT
A = ACCEPT IT
F = FEEL IT
E = EXPRESS IT

SEE IT
Step 1 requires you to mentally picture yourself in the future, having achieved your goals. More than this, it encourages you to be aware of the details - the colours, sights, sounds, senses and emotions of having achieved the desired goal. See the results in your imagination, play a video in you mind of having completed the project, attained the goal. See the celerations and the congratulation and feel the emotions of satisfaction, joy, pride in yourself.,

ACCEPT IT
Step 2 is about opening yourself up to possibility and accepting fully that you can achieve the goal. You may not know how as yet, but your acceptance should be congruent with yourself. You may have some doubts or evern fears, but yuour focus here is to concentrate on remaining open and accepting.

FEEL IT
Step 3 asks you to feel the emotions associated with attaining your desired goals. It is about almost teleporting yourself to that time and place in the future and sensing those feelings...right NOW. The stronger the emotion, the stronger the attraction to the goal.

EXPRESS IT
Now for the creative part! Step 4 requires that you express your goal in some creative way. You can write about it, draw, paint, collage - particularly useful if you find it difficult to mentally picture (visualise) your goal. Whatever creative action you take, include as much detail as possible as to how life is, having achieved your goal.

NOTE: In reality this is not a step-by-step process for 'right-brained' thinking is non-linear.

Play your mental video over a couple of times a day, for a few days at least. If you created pictures, writing or motivational phrases, then place around you where you will see them often.

S.A.F.E goal setting is a neat fit with using vision boards/dream boards a creative process in itself.


Turbo-charge your choices by 'associating' into each of the images that you choose. Don't just see yourself driving that new car, feel yourself sitting in it...sense those emotions, become aware of where in your body they are.

The same goes for motivational words and phrases, hear those words in a voice you totally respect and that really does motivate you.

In the coming days and weeks pay close attention to your thoughts. Having planted the seed of your goals, your intuition is likely to be nurturing it, and alert you to opportunities for success, that you would otherwise have been oblivious to.
