Can you use goal setting to find and maintain Happiness?

Sure, and why not? It is something that you want, is it not? My experience is a resounding YES!

There is something to be said for drifting through life as a little boat at sea, going where the wind blows....and if you are very happy doing that then these wise words come to mind, 'if it ain't broke don't fix it.'

However, I guess you arrived at this site to find happiness and at this page because you are in need of direction in your life.

I discovered the power of setting goals / goalsetting through Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and used them to turn my life around.- new car, holidays to distant lands, new job, improved life-work balance.

YES goalsetting really works!

In the short-term, in that moment, I was happy, but in truth I was continually chasing material goals. It became like riding the proverbial hamster wheel....until

Why Goal Setting is Important.

In truth we all set goals, things we want to do, to achieve, to work towards - but mostly they are passing thoughts and ideas and they too often remain inside our heads. The result is that when we look back we end up saying to ourselves:-

  1. 'I was going to do that'
  2. 'I wish I'd got around to it, but I never found the time.'
  3. 'If only I'd done that then, I would have.....now'
Goal setting can be likened to a 'life shopping list,' a way or prioritising what you want in your life, both now, and in the future. It focuses your attention and gives you a 'road-map' to your desired 'destination.' Click here for 3 easy steps to your happiness.

Research has shown that people who write down their goals are much more likely to achieve them than those who don't. So to ensure that you get off to a good start with your goalsetting you will need to commit to paper.

The golden rule with goal setting is to WRITE THEM DOWN.

Two caveats to goal setting

  1. Your goal may actually happen in a different way to how you planned, intended or visualised.
  2. You may decide some way along the path towards your intended desires, that it no longer holds true for you.

It really is OK to re-evaluate and adapt your goals. In truth it is the smart choice. It is important to retain some flexibility,

There are several goal setting techniques that will help you tailor your goal. There's bound to be one that is right for you. Here are some to begin with.

One of the undoubted factors about making changes is:

WHEN YOU BEGIN TO MAKE CHANGES...EVEN EVER SO SLIGHT ONES,
THEN THE WORLD YOU EXPERIENCE CHANGES TOO.

Test it out.

Do something small that you don't usually do, a behaviour that is a little unusual for you:-

  • take a tray of cakes into work, even if it's not your birthday - that always gets them, and you'll get a lot of attention and thanks, except from the dieters amongst them
  • smile at strangers as you pass them by - a common practice here in England among hikers, dog walkers and perhaps joggers, but beyond that pretty much not commonplace
  • wave cheerily to people from your car - will they wave back? At the least they'll try to remember who you are and at best.....you might just make their day.

Do whatever takes your fancy. Have FUN with it ........keep it POSITIVE and CARING though.

And perhaps you'll discover too that 'what you give out is what you get back.'

Goal Setting is a Win/Win.

That's why HAPPINESS is such a great goal to set. Everyone benefits along the way too. It's a win/win for everyone.

Of course your goals can vary from something small, and short-term for example

  • 'getting through another day at work tomorrow'

Or life-changing and llong term for example

  • 'retiring to the Mediterranean in 5 years time.

My happiness goals stemmed from my personal definition of happiness which is:

I am relaxed, content and fulfilled.
I spend quality time with people I love and open myself up to new friendships.
I challenge myself to be creative and learn new things every day.
I appreciate the wonder of the world around me.

Remember you can set Happiness as YOUR goal. Do it! BE HAPPY.
