Is happines a delusion? Need your help.

2010 is the year many people are counting on. Last year we stumbled through yet another recession, a year of
financial hardships, redundancies and job losses in addition to the usual life-changing events
over which we have little or no control.

Following quickly on the heels of Christmas, the new year is symbolic of new beginnings, fresh
hopes and optimism. Christmas is surely the biggest global focus on family. It's up close,
in your face, from September onwards. The media hype is about families, togetherness and happiness,
though not the emotional welfare and goodness happiness, but the materialistic and ideallistic one.

Such a lengthy and concentrated focus on family happiness may serve only to reveal the fragile
foundations on which some families exist. And yet they believe they are happy.

For some families, an aftermath of Christmas is the realisation that they are in an abusive relationship,
be that physical, mental or both. What one partner thought to be normal ups and downs, under
close inspection is riddled with control, intimidation, abuse and ridicule.

How best does one support a friend or family member in that situation? Do we turn a blind eye, let them
sort it out themselves or not get involved for fear of making it worse.

It is a huge 'can of worms' I am opening here and a really complex subject. I know there is no definitive
solution but knowing you're not alone is a first step.

I welcome helpful comments you would be willing for me to publish on happinesspages.com on how best to support family or friends in an abusive relationship. I will of course consider each one carefully and may need to get back to you.

I look forward to hearing from you. Please contact me here

Sincerely

BOSP - understated success

Today was a surreal experience. It was ike entering another world. One that
goes on behind the scenes unnoticed, as we busy ourselves with our frantic highly
commercialised Christmas shopping.

We get so caught up in our own lives that maybe we don't stop to
consider others. Guilty as charged!

Today I spent the day at BOSP (Brighter Opportunities for Supported Play), a respite care
scheme for children and young adults with learning difficulties. I had worked
with some of these children and their families when they were pre-schoolers.

I was greeted by a whole band of young people eager to make a difference to the
lives of others. I was hugely impressed and felt very humbled. This is how THEY
CHOOSE TO SPEND their Saturdays, and they absolutely love it!

As I stood there I could not help but be aware of the nearby shopping centre,
heaving with people eager to spend hard-earned cash on the latest gadgets, gizmos and
other mostly useless stuff that will likely be forgotten within one day of the great festive
gift exchange that is Christmas. And here were these youngsters giving their time and
energy to bring a little more happingess to others.

Ranging from ages 5 - 18, many of the children attending the Saturday and holiday
scheme are allocated 1 on 1 support throughout the day. The 'special school' facilites
offer a wonderful and safe environment for trampoline, hydrotherapy sessions, sensory and soft play,
plus music sport and drama in the afternoon.

The dedicated team of youngsters were bright, witty and entertaining and they
understood and interacted brilliantly with the children, under the guidance of three
incredibly hard-working supervisors.

Like most schemes of this kind, BOSP is a charity supported by donations and grants,
for which there is increasing bureaucracy and monitoring to secure ongoing funding. The success
of BOSP sees a burgeoning demand by parents willing to travel even greater distances...and the added
pressure of having to limit the places or turn people away.

To find out more about BOSP or to make a donation please visit their website BOSP.co.uk

Women's Happiness Research -5 Steps to Being Happy

According to Gallup researcher Marcus Buckingham, happy women have decided that they will be happy regardless of circumstance and no matter whether they are rich or poor.
Buckingham polled thousands of women for www.huffingtonpost.com, asking them the following five questions:

1. How often do you get to do things you really like?
For most of us, the day is filled up with things we have to do rather than things we want to do.
The happiest women are those who, rather than dreaming about taking that magical trip, joining a new group or simply having a night out, go ahead and plan it.

2. How often do you find yourself actively looking forward to the day ahead?
Changing your perspective to try to feel happier about your day is a key step towards attaining happiness.
And what if your job is so depressing that it's impossible to change your perspective on it? In the current climate, it seems inadvisable to suggest that you quit (unless it really is so awful that you can't get through another day), so instead try to find something good to focus on at the end of the day to help you get through the hours.

3. How often do you get so involved in what you're doing that you lose track of time?
Those who are happy in their jobs rarely notice the hours ticking by. The rest of us kill time by staring at the clock, surfing the internet and checking the clock again, only to realise fewer than five minutes have passed.
And it doesn't just have to be work-related - if you concentrate more on what you are doing during the day and become more involved, then you'll find that you enjoyed it more.

4. How often do you feel invigorated at the end of a long, busy day?
According to Buckingham, however, happiness comes from feeling exhilarated rather than simply exhausted at the end of the day.
And how are you to achieve this state of happiness? The answer, he claims, lies in savouring those moments during the day when something good happens, regardless of how small.

5. How often do you feel an emotional high?
It's all to easy simply to drift through the days on autopilot, cooking, cleaning, tidying, working, eating, sleeping and then getting up the next day and doing it all over again.
Instead, according to Buckingham, we should 'focus on moments rather than goals, plans or dreams' and strive to find satisfaction in what we already have.
