Stories for Change Metaphor Examples?![]() The metaphor examples here are: metaphorical stories written specifically Increasingly people of all ages are dissatisfied with some aspect of their life, and yet they are unable to see a way to change it.
Listing the pros and cons of a problem works for some, but logic and the critical self intervenes. As Edward Bulwar-Lyton stated - THE PEN IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD. Your words affect how you think, feel and do, and open a window to awareness of your inner self and how it operates in the world. My purpose here is twofold:
Healing Stories change lives and Change Stories heal lives. The common metaphor examples of life as a journey or as a mountain to climb may have become cliches, but in essence they allow you greater freedom. You are not restriced by the reality of your situation because you can mould, manipulate, sculpt, harvest, cultivate your life story. These stories were written both for myself and for friends. Each one is carefully constructed to address an issue in our lives at that time. Welcome to the metaphorical examples of:-
Aristotle argued that metaphor requires Metaphor Examples - Story 1. The first of my metaphor examples is a ...'rose garden.' It is therefore much more powerful as a communication tool than my telling you that in reality a friend had a decision to make.
It had called out to her the very first time she laid eyes upon it. She longed to own the beautiful flower in her neighbour’s garden. Every time she glanced upon it her heart missed a beat. Its perfect beauty excited her. Its vibrant colour shone out to her and its perfume filled her head with a sublime dizziness.
She pictured it often. How beautiful it would look on her bedside table, where she could look upon it every day, and enjoy fully its enchantment and the pleasure it brought her. This wonderful flower filled her with hope and longing for the future and she basked in the sunlight of that emotion.
Each year the flower grew stronger and the pull greater. She meant to have it for herself. She summoned up her courage. Today was the day. It would be hers forever.
She reached out her hand towards the bloom. He eyes rested upon the other flowers around her prize. She hesitated. She had not noticed before, how the smaller buds snuggled in beneath this bloom and how they seemed protected by it. Nor had she noticed before the row of sharp thorns along the length of its graceful stem.
She thought too, of her neighbour and how she would feel if she suffered such a loss… and in that thought too, was the knowing deep in her heart that if she held this precious rose close to her, then its thorns may pierce her flesh and cause her harm.
She quickly withdrew her hand and stepped back.
She felt deceived. Was this the beautiful object she had set her heart on for so long? Why had she never noticed these things earlier? She looked again. It seemed different now...less desirable somehow. …full of its own importance and a touch arrogant perhaps. (If such a thing is possible of a flower)
In this moment her desire dissolved and she knew it was not to be hers. She took one last look, then turned and..... walked away. How to write an isomorphic Metaphor Story
'A metaphor is...a verbal message that can be easily visualised by the reader or listener.' (Coping.org) Simple metaphor examples, a dance, sport, an object - or simple comparison enables you to view something in a different way. More complex metaphor stimulate the mind to uncover their true meaning, usually unconsciously. Metaphor examples story 2 I wrote Leticia, for myself. As a grandmother of five, I felt apprehension about plans I made to backpack on my own in Peru. This story began with a drawing and then evolved from there.
fields of soft, succulent grass, Perhaps. But then …come closer to home…GREENS.
Yep, vegetables…you know …like peas….and cabbage….and Brussel sprouts….and yuk! Whoever invented lettuce? That wet, green stuff that sits on the side of your plate. It glistens with water droplets from its dunking under the tap, or shines with slimy oil ….no thanks. The things people eat. You just wouldn't credit it. Doesn’t it make you want to vomit? Quite simply, you wouldn’t want to eat Leticia either, that would surely be unwise. (Though I am told that many people do somewhere in the world)
There had been a time, when she was younger that she spoke out more readily but then her words were fuelled by anger or frustration and often failed, like arrows flying wide of their mark. (For anger misdirects the message one is giving.) Leticia had ventured as far as the bulrushes at the big lake in the park, and had swum the length of the nearby brook. She always returned to sit by her pond. But now Leticia was growing restless. She had watched the little froglets as they ventured off into the big wide world and welcomed them on their return. Long into the night she listened as they recounted stories from far and wide. As Winter drew nearer and it was time again to hibernate, she decided to act upon her urges and set about planning her journey. She loved the warmth of the sun on her back and to learn new things. She took a keen interest in other cultures too. Also Leticia now faced the world on her own and this brought its own perils. In Spring she had heard the incessant croaking of the bullfrogs and pictured them puffing out their chests. Her mind was elsewhere. She felt a rush of adrenalin and pangs of excitement as she thought of the new challenges ahead. She was tinged with fear too…fear of the unknown. She had always traveled with others in the past. This time she would face it alone. As you can imagine, a frog’s life is somewhat dangerous. Playing games of hop skip and jump with the household cat….en route to being the main course, that is. She comforted herself with the thought that she had survived the cat thus far and she had.. crossed the roads safely many times, She breathed a sigh of relief and turned her thoughts once more to her future. She was ready for new adventure in her life, something different from her daily humdrum routine. She knew what to do. She would ask rabbit, and bird, and dragonfly. They would surely know. A Metaphor Story Written for a Group of PeopleMetaphor examples - story 3, 'the rainforest' was written for a local school to which a new headteacher was appointed after many years. The large staff sensed only impending doom by the proposed changes. The 'rainforest' provides a more complex metaphor example by likening the environment to a forest, and the inhabitants as its creatures. Note the reference to hierarchy in the forest animals - very characteristic of working in a U.K school. The story attempts to plant a subconscious message for hope and prosperity to alleviate their fears. Metaphor Examples - Story 3. It was a beautiful place. The lush green canopy sheltered and protected its inhabitants from the burning sun. The rain bombarded the magestic sculptured leaves like pebbles showering down on an exposed tin roof. It then trickled into the gathering pool below with the reassuring tinkle of wind chimes in a gentle breeze. The coming of the rain meant the forest was refreshed, and a new and invigorating energy would follow. Without the rain the forest would not survive. There had been rumblings in this beautiful place and all the creatures that lived there retreated into the heart for the forest for they felt threatened and afraid. The creatures of the air had brought back news from the outside world that the dreaded loggers were encroaching into their most precious forest. The agile canopy dwellers had quickly spread the word. The more timid floor dwellers sought places of safety, camouflaged neatly by the abundant and varied vegetation of the forest floor. Some creatures had fled this place, and yet others had seemingly crept in and mingled with the frightened herds. Such creatures were able to move silently and effortlessly from the life-giving waters that flowed through the forest to the top of the tallest tree. For some time the animals lives in this state of fear and trepidation. The great overseers, the birds of the air and the tree creatures kept a watchful eye from the river boundary to the loggers road. Still some creatures felt restless and concerned about their fragile ecosystem.
The noises they heard kept them awake at night. They painted pictures in their minds of monster machines tearing down their trees, devastating their sacred land - upsetting the structure of their world. Now, had these creatures ventured to the edge of the forest themselves, they would see that the much talked of, loggers road had always existed. It was just a well-trodden path by which land creatures could enter or leave the forest. And they would hear with their own ears, that the monster machines were in fact strengthening their boundary.
And... the careful planting and nurturing of a whole range of species meant that their ecosystem was being re-shaped to ensure the future success of all its inhabitants.
For it is said that even out of chaos comes order. And...it is said that the gentle flutter of a butterfly's wings in the rainforest will transmit an energy that will be felt in some way in time and space.

In the context of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) stories, anecdotes, folk tales, fairy tales, parables and myths are all metaphor examples. 'Dragon Thoughts' is in the style of a fairy tale.
'Metaphors are figures of speech which can give great color and depth to our language.' (Coping.org)> Metaphor Examples - Story 4. It was that time of year that dragons like most. A time when their beautiful iridescent scales could soak up the warmth of the sun bringing energy and vitality. The vitality to soar to their hearts' content in the azure skies above. The dragon's heart sang for joy as it whiled away the long summer days with the frivolity of youth. It gazed down on the cleverly crafted masterpiece below. The beautiful greens and yellows of the enormous patchwork quilt was broken only occasionally by the glint of tiny mirrors that embellished its gently undulating surface. And at the edges of this earthly cover, where the greens meet the blue, way of in the distance, the arc of the horizon beckoned to the dragon. He had heard tell of far off lands and yearned to visit them.
The thought of the approaching cold winter days clouded the dragon's mind. So little time he thought to spend outside. So much time inside his cave....his view restricted by its narrow entrance.
Best to occupy his mind with something else he thought.

Metaphor Examples - Story 5. As John rode his sleek new bike along the winding country lanes, he was aware only of the hedgerows flashing by on either side of him...a ribbon of ever-changing green. He could hear the whirr of the pedals and the sound of the air rushing past. He felt his hands tighten on the handlebars and his feet pushing round the pedals to the rhythm of his heartbeat.
His journey was both uphill and downhill. He afforded himself the luxury of coasting on the downward slopes. He let his feet rest on the pedals, relaxed his grip on the handlebars enjoyed the wind in his hair. Even as he gathered speed, he knew he was in control. John focused on the road ahead for he had set himself a target distance to travel this day. As he cycled calmly and with purpose he turned his thoughts to memories of previous journeys, less pressured that he'd shared with friends. They had chatted as they walked alongside their bikes, pushing them up the steepest hills. They'd laughed joyously as they sped down the other side, embracing the moment for they knew they were fully in contol and could stop at any moment. This was a new road for John and though he had checked the route before leaving home, he hadn't taken account of the lie of the land. He wondered how many more hills might lie ahead of him. He could not yet see his destination, but he knew it must be close now, for he had travelled some considerable distance this day. As he listened to the rhythm of the pedals and watched the blur of the spokes dissolve into a mesmerising pattern of light, the road beneath him passed quickly. Once more John became lost in his own thoughts.
Then suddenly he became aware of a rider at his side and a renewed vigour coursed through his veins, fuelling his desire to complete the task he had set himself. The other rider seemed to be traveling effortlessly still, at this late stage in the race.
John adjusted his posture, pace and rhythm to mirror that of his new traveling companion. They crossed the finishing line almost together. John was very pleased that he achieved his personal best and satisfied that he had competed on his own terms. As he watched the other riders cross the line, he saw them punch the air in celebration. In that moment, he recognised himself in them.
This metaphor example story is for those moments in life where you lose sight of where you are going but feel secure in the knowledge that you will make it.

Metaphors workproviding you then follow up with action. This metaphor example led me to terminate my teaching career and go visit Peru. A note here: I had no idea that corn is a staple diet in Peru. Did my subconscious know something that I did not. Metaphor Examples - Story 6. It had taken considerable time to prepare the field for planting...and now it was almost ready. As she held the tiny seeds tightly in her grasp, she dreamed of the wonderful, tall, ripe maize that would one day stand before her, nodding it's head in the gentle breeze of the hillside. She could hear the rustle of the leaves as they brushed against each other. She could feel the warm sun on her face. The long and arduous journey to the field of dreams had been made worse by the secrecy of her toil...and the uneven boulders strewn along the way. She had often watched the sure-footed mountain goats and wondered just how they were able to move around so easily on such unstable terrain. Each day the young farm girl had taken the long and winding path from her home, to a place not too far away, yet out of view of her house. She had worked hard to clear this patch of land, to remove the rocks and stones from underfoot and to dig into the soil, the rich nutrients for her future crop.
As she worked she could almost taste the sweet and succulent golden corn. It always reminded her of sunshine - the long hazy days of Summer, and of hope and pleasure. She told few people of her desires, lest they should slip fro her like the dawn mist that clouded the hillside, sometimes so briefly it was possible to question its existence at all. She enjoyed the challenge of the work. She relished the freedom of the open air and delighted in the promise of achievement from her lengthy toil. She was nearing completion. As she looked back at her work, and recognised the scale of her achievement, she felt tears trickle down her face. There was both joy and sadness in those tears. As she reached up to brush them away, she gazed off into the distance - a deep longing in her heart. Her eyes stung as the tears welled up. She tried to blink them back to stem their flow, but to no avail. As they fell silently from her cheeks she became aware only of these tiny droplets of life-giving liquid, as they cascaded to the bare earth beneath her. As if in slow motion she followed their path and witnessed the momentary change in colour of the soil, as each one found its mark...and was gone. And tiny though they were each seemed to carry with it some huge weight - something of the past, and something of the present perhaps. She knew in that moment there would be more tears in the future too, but she hoped there would be many more tears of joy. Joyous tears land not with a thud, but with the grace and elegance of the lightest ballerina dancing her brightest dance. And ...joyous tears are accompanied by laughter and smiles, by bright eyes and happiness. 'Enough tears' said a stern but reassuring voice inside her head, 'now back to the task in hand.' She regained her composure and set to work once again. She carefully selected each seed and set it lovingly in the ground. The soil was soft and warm to the touch as she moulded a home for the new life that would emerge. Her hillside would soon take on a new appearance, as the soft green shoots poke their heads through the soil to gaze at the sun, drinking in its energy and warmth.
The rays of light would give them the strength and vitality to become all that they could be.
