Gemstone gifts date back to medieval times. The longer the duration of the marriage, the more precious the gemstone, hence ruby wedding anniversary is 40 years and diamond wedding anniversary is 60 years.

Me, I'm a little way past the pearl wedding anniversary. These days I doubt many are willing to wait 60 years for that diamond!
